What is mun?

Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of the United Nations that aims to educate participants about current events, topics in international relations, diplomacy, and the United Nations agenda. The participants role-play as diplomats representing a nation or NGO in a simulated session of a committee of the United Nations, such as the Security Council or the General Assembly. The ultimate goal of MUN is to simulate debate over real issues and identifying solutions to those issues.

Here in Manchester, we do MUN in two ways: weekly sessions, and attending our own MANMUN conference alongside other conferences around the UK and Europe.

joining the society - faq

1. How do I join the MANMUN Society?

A: You need to do two things: attend our weekly sessions (click here for more info) and join our Society's Facebook Group (click on the link to join!)

2. When will the first meeting take place?

A: Due to ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we are working with the Students' Union to organize the session as safely and effectively as possible. Information about the next session will be posted here

3. Do I need any experience to join?

A: No! MANMUN is open to everyone regardless of experience. Our Society is made up of veterans with 20+ conferences under their belts and beginner delegates looking to attend their first conference, so you're bound to find someone in the same boat as you!

4. Do I have to be a student at The University of Manchester to join the society?

A: Due to insurance reasons, all members must be current students at The University of Manchester. We are unable to accept any members who fail to meet this criterion.

5. Do I need to dress formally for the weekly sessions?

A: No. Formal attire is compulsory when attending conferences, including our in-house MANMUN conferences.

6. Can I join in the middle of the semester?

A: Yes! We have members joining throughout the year, so you're welcome to attend anytime!

7. What is the MANMUN 2021 Conference? How can I join it?

A: MANMUN 2021 is the latest instalment of our in-house conferences. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, this conference will be 100% online. You can find more information about applications here.

Note: We aim to host future MANMUN conferences in-person as soon as it is safe to do and government restrictions are lifted.
